Yesterday I was alerted to the presence of BeatPort, a legal mp3 download site dedicated to underground dance music. While it's solely dedicated to this genre and doesn't have the breadth or the scope of iTunes, they're well on their way to capturing a niche market. I found several labels that I recognized, the music was easy to sample, and the quality is excellent. It's mostly independent European and underground domestic labels thus far, but rumor has it Peter Rauhofer and Victor Calderone are soon going to put their catalogs online here as well. We shall see.

  1. I've spoken with folks from just about every dance music MP3 upstart, but Beatport is gonna make it through. My friend Wyatt is one of the company's founders; he's approached this with fresh ideas and excellent methods of making dance music easier to translate to mainstream ears. He's also an excellent producer in his own right: Download his track "Android." It was probably my favorite house record of 2002.

    Thanks for responding, Andy, but I'm not mad. I just felt upon reading the post that if all the whole damn world is on our asses, why should we take pleasure in doing the same thing to a (virtual) bra. Oh, wait! I think I could rephrase that....

    Besides, we had a hurricane beating down upon us here in Alabama as I wrote. Any tenseness in my comment was probably due to the Panties In A Bunch effect. Thanks
