Fire in the Hole

Fire

At about 4 pm today smoke was pouring out of a hole at the corner of 7th Ave. and 21st. Towleroad happened to be on the scene. Because of the fire on the C train caused by a vagrant last night that has put that subway out of commission for years, yes years, I was more than concerned that the 1 and 9 were on fire this afternoon.

This fireman told me that it was a manhole fire. I'm not sure how often that happens in New York, but I'm sure it happens in Chelsea more often than other neighborhoods.

  8. Somehow, even before I clicked on the 'comments' tab, I knew it was going to be all about the fireman. (Damn you guys for beating me to it!)

  9. "Years, yes years"

Ah...quit your bitching. At least NYC still has a has developed public transportation system...and taxis. LA spent longer than that to get one Metro that goes downtown. Who goes to downtown LA? Get me on a train that goes to the beach...and I'm bringing that fireman along for the ride!

  10. I hope you had a private talk with that fire boy. Maybe you 2 can rub two sticks together and see if it is true that a fire will result. Usually the fluid puts out the fire eventually! That has always been my experience--at least temporarily out.

  12. while the fireman jokes are wildly entertaining, it's really just cool to see familiar scenes on the site (be them of subway fires or pita city). welcome to nyc.

  18. Now he was me thinking all I had to worry about on my visit to New York next week was snow - now I have to worry about exploding man holes! LOL

  19. Ahh yes, manhole fires, defunct subways, relentless wet snow, cab fare hikes, steam pipe explosions, chicks wearing uggs in the muck, water main breaks, club raids, friends who live in Brooklyn and invite you to come out to some burg bar and of course, those fabulous NYC rents.... I do miss New York. Today was so chilly in LA, the fog came in this morning and I had to remember my hoody. Oh and there was a woman who cut me off on La Brea so I made it to work 8 seconds later than i would have if she had just stayed in her lane.
