Brokeback Mountain Teaser Trailer
For more information on Brokeback Mountain make sure to visit our full guide: The Towleroad Guide to Brokeback Mountain.
Several screenshots have surfaced for the gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, however, they don't reveal much about how the gay love story is going to be played out in the film. Thus, this is not the Brokeback Mountain cockteaser trailer we've all been salivating for. However, perhaps we can add some captions and try to discern just what is going on here:
Fade In: The intoxicating Wyoming landscape—a perfect day for cattle ranching.

"C'mon Ennis, let's find some cattle. Oh, but first let's cross this wide river."

"Hey wait. I just thought of something. You're pretty cute for a rancher, and
I've got a bottle of Merlot back at the cabin."

"Forget the cattle, let's go find that little cabin in the woods."

COMING: FALL 2005.
If you get a chance to read Annie Proulx' story before this film comes out, do it. It's a fine piece of writing. We'll continue to follow this 'back as it breaks.

I read the story and it was awesome. I can only hope that despite the failure of other "gay" themed movies, this one will remain true to the original story.

it's a great little novella. I too hope that the film captures the mood of it..

It's a powerful little story. I'm not a weeper and it made me cry. Amazing that Proulx "gets" something about men's hearts so well. I hope that Ang Lee doesn't sanitize it.

I bought a copy of the book recently, and it was soooo moving - i was crying by the end though - the author really captured the emotions of love and sexual attraction alike. Hope the film's even a quarter as good.

I pray every time i read the book that Ang Lee doesn't disappoint us.If the movie is half as good as the book i'll be there on opening night because it's everything i've wanted in a gay love story. Thank YOU Ann Proulx for being in tune like to man's emotoins like this.

Now this movie isn't going to be released until December 2005!
I can't wait that long--I've been patient long enough. We need to start a petition to get this mivue out in less than a year. It's all about the Oscar I hear. The Oscars suck--the gays don't even watch anymore. Who's with me?
Posted by: Joe | Mar 22, 2005 1:13:53 AM
It's good news that it's not coming out til December! That means the makers believe it's good enough to win Oscars!

I am going to try to read the book first.

If you're anticipating the movie, then you should get your hands on the short story written by Annie Proulx. It's amazing.

Read the story...As good as you've heard. Heard of the casting for the movie and was encouraged. Have seen Ang Lee's "The Wedding Banquet" and am confident he can direct a realistic gay love story. Explicit? Most probably not - However I have no doubt that he'll manage to capture the depth of emotion
the story requires. If he manages to produce a version that both straights and gays can embrace, it will not only serve the movie going public, but society as well. I suspect the man's got it in him.

Latest IMDB info: limited release is Dec 9, select cities in late Dec, and here's the bad news, "wide release" not till January 06! I don't know if that means worldwide, or more US cities, but I don't want to have to wait till 06! I've been dying to see Gyllenhaal in something great besides Donnie Darko. I haven't been thrilled with much of anything else he's done, but I think he's a wonderful actor and given the right script he's gunna blow us away again...this could be it!

The Pasion of Heath...
As many of us all know Heath Ledger is the pride and joy of his father, Mel Gibson. The same man who spoke out AGAIST gays and any act of homosexuality. Not only do I and the majority of the gay community, have an extreem dislike for Mr. Gibson and contiue not to support him and his homophobia, to add insult to injury, I find it extreemly amusing that his own son is starring in a strictly gay film. Heres to you Mel, and Fred Phelps the queer bashing sucubus. WE WILL DEFEAT YOU!

Here's an e-mail from a film critic a friend of mine knows who just saw the movie at the Venice Film Festival:
"i cannot tell you how unexpectedly moved i was by brokeback mountain. it is beautiful in every respect, casting, performance, direction, screen adaptation, scoring, cinematography. so heartbreaking and as a venetian critic (female) said to me after, it's just about love isn't it? love for everybody. i don't think heath or jake will ever do anything better."
Looks to me like Ang Lee might have pulled it off after all.

They're already talking about Ledger being a shoe-in for an Academy Award.
This film is huge.
As for Jake, I've been in love with him ever since "October Sky". The line between human and angel is blurred once again.

I caught Brokeback Mountain this Sept. at the Toronto International Film Festival. The movie has the feel of an old fashioned epic western, complete with dramatic scenery, fistfights and a slow and linear pace. That the two male leads have a passionate and sexual relationship, something that would never have been permitted, let alone explored in the heyday of the traditional western, is a welcome variation to the hetero-centric versions of the genre. Ledger and Gyllenhaal do Annie Proulx’s story justice, and particularly Ledger stands out as the taciturn Ennis. The love scenes between the two men came across as authentic and unforced. I have reservations about the film’s length- near the end, it wanders and gets sidetracked, dissipating the emotional impact of the ending. As well, some of the musical score was intrusive and unnecessary. That said, I commend director Ang Lee’s courage and sensitivity in translating this heart-wrenching story to the screen. I connected with the movie on an emotional level, and will see it again when it comes out in general release. PS…I find it somewhat ironic that the movie was filmed in Alberta, the Canadian province most resistant to the now countrywide law allowing gay couples the right to marry.

Umm, Heath Ledger is not related to Mel Gibson, he just played his son in a movie, The Patriot.

BTW, was anyone else surprised by the casting? I would have thought Heath would have played Jack, and Jake would have played Ennis, which I realize probably comes from my own stereotypes of gay vs. straight vs. bisexual. I wonder if Ang Lee purposely cast them against type just to further throw an audience's preconceived notions out the window.

I just saw the trailer of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN to c what all the fuzz was about, trust me... it brought tears to my eyes. I hope Ang Lee can really express what gay feelings really are, especially how it was portrayed in the book. I guess this will be an Academy Award kind of movie, certainly it looks very convincing and romantic... CAN'T WAIT 2 C IT!!! :)

My only problem with the film and men who are homosexual and marry women in general when their heart is elsewhere is the issue of infidelity: not being faithful to one's spouse, not being faithful to one's lover, and not being faithful to one's self.
Posted by: Meret | Nov 22, 2005 11:50:40 AM
to antonio:
what about heterosexual straight men WHO ARE NOT faithful to their spouse, their lover, their kids...... and ultimately to their ownselves? are you saying its ok for a straight dude to cheat on the g/f or wife.... as opposed to a gay dude doin it? coz thats exactly how you come across!!

Cant wait to see the two beautiful men together..hope people will keep an open mind!

Oh, what a lovely movie. So much more than just about a very hot sex scene, which is all the religious right can see. It's about longing, and waiting, and hiding, and love. About years of suffering, and decades more to come. About what our parents want us to see, and what our hearts tell us is real, and the tumultous battle between the two. My heart broke for the two men, but it also broke for the young wife, completely lost, and the mother, afraid to properly grieve. And for the present wives and mothers and people who live out this life every day.
Lovely, lovely, lovely.
And on a lighter note--God, was Heath Ledger hot! Makes me want to be a gay man...

Saw the movie on it's opening night - what a stunningly beautifully filmed movie. Both Jake and Heath (in particular Heath) actored superbly in tear jerking moment. Although well over 2 hours long it was ample to tell the whole story by Annie Proulx in it's entirety. It certainly hit a nerve with me growing up in the country with a restrictive upbringing. We don't know how lucky we are living in 21st Century Western world. Just remember there are still those living lies and secrets - spare a thought for them, it isn't always easy to escape or accept feeling that you have.
Ang Lee - you will hopefully change societys attitude.
Thank you.

i think i might be the only straight bloke writing a comment but whatever, i watched the film last week and it really did blow me away. I went with a girl i know and was reluctant but i'm glad i did now. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing so i went really for his input which i thought has been overshadowed by heath and his acting. Heath was amazing don't get me wrong but u must remember Gyllenhaal had to play the more forceful of the two charactors and he did it well, i salute him and them both for there acting in this film and to openning my eyes. WOW

i really loved the film. i went home and cried for the love that jack and ennis had, and the sacrifices they had to make just to celebrate that love. there are so few of that kind of love (hetero or homo!) and i can only wish i'd find it. ang lee is so good, but so are heath and jake! i especially liked the scene when they met for the first time in 4 years. gods, what passion! i hope they win the oscars! (A, from the Phils.)

however the flim good is,i still cann't accept this love between two men.maybe man can love man,but not by this way, especially the two cowboys are normal,at least in the begining.also that is not the way we encourage the behaviors of gays,we just appreciate it.(but anyway discriminate any homo is not right)

This is a very special movie. I'm brazilian and I've just watched it in Rio de Janeiro. The whole society can see the love between two men with different eyes. The largest quantity of similar cases in Brazil can make us to think of teaching our children in a different way. Free of prejudice. Free os sense of difference. That's it! I loved it...

no , the story would be more powerfull if the maker didnt jump to much in time. Zoom in on some more details. But it was still a good movie I enjoyed it and it opend my eyes for myself and i'm sure also to others to...

I think Brokeback mountain is one of the greatest love storys of my time. It leaves you feeling sad and lonely and heart broken like you can feel the pain that Heath Ledgers charecter is playing. I think it is a beautiful love story.
