Boy Scout Director a Homophobic Hypocrite (And a Lecher)
The National Director of Programs for the Boy Scouts of America has been charged with distributing and receiving images of child pornography involving young boys.
A little bit of searching uncovered a letter that Douglas Smith Jr. wrote to the Corporate Legal Times (link removed—cached here) in response to a disfavorable article that Eagle Scout Bruce D. Collins wrote regarding James Dale and the legal actions surrounding the Boy Scouts policy on homosexuality.
Collins is also a the corporate vice president and general counsel of C-SPAN. He wrote in the Corporate Legal Times:
"As contentious and even as violent as the 1960s were, I had always seen my Boy Scout life as a refuge from the political and culture wars. My well-thumbed Boy Scout Handbook (which I still have) was chock full of good stuff about both camping and life skills. It counseled morality, clean living and obedience. Its themes were tolerance and inclusiveness.
Ours was a troop of boys from all economic classes that served as a haven from the often brutal social divisions we all experienced in junior and high school. Nerds and poor kids could be leaders in Boy Scouts.
But now, after reading the cases and Scouting's vigorous defense of itself, it seems there has been a fundamental change. The Boy Scouts have been dragged into-or have placed themselves amid-the broad division that has infected the rest of our society.
Just as national politics have been dichotomized into blue and red states, so, too, has Scouting been set apart. As a former Boy Scout, an Eagle Scout to this day and a citizen, I am not happy about it. I can see no a good outcome on the horizon."
Douglas Smith, Jr., the accused child pornographer, wrote a letter to the editor in defense of the Boy Scout's right to homophobic practices:
"Some intolerant elements in our society want to force scouting to abandon its values and to become fundamentally different. They want scouting to forego its constitutional rights, affirmed in 2000 by the Supreme Court in BSA v. Dale, and adopt fundamentally different values from the ones that helped shape the character of Mr. Collins and 106 million other young men over the past 94 years.
It bothers Mr. Collins that scouting is defending itself, even though he acknowledged that it has been "dragged into" the "culture war." He says the tone of our legal-issues web site, bsalegal.org, is defensive. The site does seek to defend our values and to inform the public about the three-decade-long legal assault on scouting. That we need a legal-issues web site is testament to the fact that our constitutional rights are under attack.
Clearly, Mr. Collins longs for a time when the Boy Scout organization could give its undivided attention to the "good stuff" of Scouting: "camping and life skills ..." So do we. Mr. Collins would do well to communicate his displeasure to those directing their discriminatory assault against his beloved Boy Scouts -- the ACLU."
So the homophobic hypocrite defending the Boy Scouts' policies against gay men is now expected to plead guilty for the distribution of child pornography involving young boys. Disgusting.

God, I was hoping it wouldn't be boys on his computer and that he wouldn't be gay. Not that any child pornography isn't disgusting. It's just another setback for us..

When I was 15, I had sex with my scoutmaster. It was in a tent at boy scout camp. It lasted all summer. I loved it! I think it happens all the time. I mean, what do you do if you are a man who wants to get in the pants of a 14 or 15 yr old? Simple! Become a priest or a coach or volunteer for the boy scouts.

let's not get too caught up in thinking about the gender of the children... to make the assumption that this man is gay because he had some kiddie porn that happened to feature boys is not useful. Pedophilia is generally a fixation on children of all genders.

Him being gay or not isn't a setback to the gay community. Any gender preference can be a pedophile. I do agree, though, that pedophilia is a sexual preference all of it's own. They tend to be attracted to the innocence, the pre-pubity hairlessness of the child regardless of their victims gender.

I always thought (as a former BSA member) that they should've had a Merit Badge for gay sex. That's where I started experimenting and I certainly wasn't alone.

The Boy Scouts are wrong. Totally wrong. And coming from experience, the only difference between gays and pedophiles is that pedophiles act on their thoughts of rimming, fisting, and having oral sex with 11-15 year olds. Heck, the high fashion magazines all use 12 year old girls with makeup now, so the hetro society are biggots to say that gays cannot mentally lust at boys like they do girls. I admit that as a gay and I mentally lust when I see a very cute boy, but know I have to wait until we gays get the age of consent down to puberty like Europe freely allows. I have self-control and the Boy Scouts do not have to worry about me forcing myself on the cute boys like they would with Michael Jackson. I think I speak for all gays when I say that being the receiver of oral sex does not make you gay anyway, and I am sure the boys in scout troops sexually experiment with each other since there is no girls around on campouts, so why is the Boy Scouts so worried about a boy having sex with an adult who is experienced in the matters of gay sex?

Being a pedophile is not an independant seperate sexual preference than being straight, bi, or gay. Like Douglas wrote, the high fashion women's magazines use 12 to 14 year old girls to sell their makeup, and if a straight 30-something man lusted after the 12 year old in the magazine makeup advertisement photo, does he overnight suddenly change his sexual preference from straight to a totally different identity called "pedophile"? Get real --- male/male and female/female is homosexuality (or bi) regardless of the difference in the ages of the sex partners. Boys do not get pregnant anyway, so what is the harm? As sexually frustrated as I was at 15 and nothing but boys at summercamp, my gay Scoutmaster really helped me and never hurt me in the least. The Boy Scouts are wrong about not letting boy-loving caring men have sex with boys who are willing. It won't make them gay to be the top or be sucked by a gay man. And like behind locked doors, what is wrong with two boys of the same age sucking each other during a campout in the privacy of a tent at night? The Girls Scouts have a long proven track record that lesbian adult/child sexual relationships work out ok. The Boy Scouts need to catch up with the Girl Scouts and allow bi and gays as members.

So long as there's no abuse or compulsion involved, and some common sense if the kid is VERY young, what's the harm in it? It's always happened, only many people decided not to look or listen. Or they try to excuse their own behaviour after the event.
