Classic New York Advertecture

Flatiron

Is this what it would look like if Christo went into advertising rather than art? Granted, Manhattan's Flatiron building did have a narrow flank of scaffolding running up its prow, but our correspondent Alan sends in this photo of a freshly installed Amazonian H&M model who looks ready to stomp across the landscape of Madison Square Park. No longer is a flat expanse necessary to sell anything, as recent explorations of the subway have shown. I am just concerned that the Statue of Liberty may soon start selling The Swiffer.

  1. Swiffer, maybe. However, I think Secret anti-perspirant or the Lady Shaver might be more apropos for Miss Liberty. I dunno...just my twisted thoughts.

  2. I took the photo because to me this is NYC distilled to its essence. Our city is and always will be completely driven by commerce - thank god.

On a trip to Barcelona several years ago I was distressed to see some of the major monuments (e.g., La Casa Battlo) covered in scaffolding. The scaffolding in turn was covered with an image of the building that was covered, giving a slightly eerie but very arty effect. At the time I thought, "In New York, they'd sell this as ad space." Prophetic, if I do say so.

  5. Is this some sort of anti-terrorist maneuver?

Couldn't they advertise something more chic, like The GAP? ;)

  6. Oh no, can this be real? This has always been my favorite building in NYC -- until now. This is grotesque.

  8. Yup. But ads that cover entire buildings have been going in in Europe for quite some time now. It's just so much ickier on a landmark like the flatiron.
