Smalltown Boy

KoryRemember the lyrics to that old Bronski Beat song?

You leave in the morning
With everything you own
In a little black case
Alone on a platform
The wind and the rain
On a sad and lonely face
Mother will never understand
Why you had to leave
For the love that you need
Will never be found at home
And the answer you seek
Will never be found at home

Thought of it right away when I saw this listing on eBay: "You are bidding on ME Kory. I am 21 yrs old, from Morehead KY. I have decided that I am sick of where I am so I am trying to find a new home. I come with Big Screen TV, laptop, PC, Cell Phone, suv, truck, and much more. Parents dont need me anymore. I have many skills, including computers, all types of construction, and much more. Many years experience in a lot of things. Currently looking for job, family, place to stay far away from here. Bored with life." (thanks Jim)

  1. Wow. I just went on e-bay it sure looks real. This sure forced some memories that I had buried back to the surface. Very sad. Thanks for the post Andy. It things like this that keep people coming back to see what you have found

  2. That's so sad. Donald is right about bad memories surfacing. After seeing Logan's Run as a kid I always dreamt of stepping into a circuit like Jenny Agutta and being transported somewhere else. Oh, fuck, I dreamt of being Jenny.

  5. Wow. Not sure what I think about this one. I can say that it made me feel lucky to have a pretty solid family life.

  6. Here's a thought -- Andy's birthday is coming up next month. If we all chip in a few bucks....

  7. oh man, he actually put his phone number in the eBay posting.

  8. Wow. You know how I love football players...

    Thanks for this one.

  9. From "Morehead", is he? Interesting.

Seriously, this is sad. The poor boy must feel really desperate to resort to this (assuming it isn't some kind of spoof).

  10. I called him - It's real - we talked at length about him coming to live with me...

  11. Curious about the 2002 dates of some of those pics. That football shot could be from sophmore year of high school!
    This is the internet remember.

  12. How profoundly sad. :(

  13. Guys - THIS is sad if you look at it like that, but it's also HOT AS HECK!!!! When we talked, it was very VERY apparent that he had to put the info about "not selling his body" on the EBay because of Ebay's rules and legal issues.

Come on guys - Look on the bright side - this is what fantasies are made of!

  14. If you read his ad, what strikes you the most is that this a guy looking to make a lot of money and get someone else to set him up in a new life. I wouldn't be so quick to ascribe too much sentiment. This guy looks like he means business

    Posted by: charlie | Apr 25, 2005 7:44:21 PM

  15. He DOES mean business - but, I SPOKE with him - he is very much OK with being a kept boy.

  16. (in the spirit of auctions -- it's ebay)

(apparently) Mr Exciting here is debt-ridden, used goods:
    - college dropout
    - involved in a legal tort with a partner
    - previous medical problem
    - assets: goods (probably purchased on time)
    - debt: 35K-50K/2 = ~$18000-25000 (today, more tomorrow).

But, he is kinda cute (in a Republican way)...

Put the car back in the garage, boys.

  17. Guys, please don't tell me that
    a) you believe everything you read on the Internet (please! i was brought up to think that homosexuals were a *discerning* bunch) and
    b) assuming this lad is 'for realz' that he's not a smart/shrewd little homo.. I know hell well that I wasn't 'sad' or 'naive' by knowing what would both get me out of my little world and that i couldn't take advantage of the youth/naievete thing on the part of older, generous, financially secure (and self hating) older gay men. I never did though. I've got a conscience and i'm not completely self-serving.

The story is timeless - smalltown boy was a song before this rentwhore placed an Ebay ad.

    i'm 33 years old.

  18. Pardon me whilst I laugh, vomit, and curl my brow at the pure absurdity. Ugh.

  19. If this fellow's posting is a real deal "cry for help," I hope the titillation stays on Towleroad, and whomever answers will answer with more compassion and less libido. Best, and highest, wishes for that.

  20. This kid is wounded inside, is naiver than he knows, is angry at his circumstances, and is decieving himself if he thinks "selling" himself to a stranger will solve his problems or reduce his anxiety. He is also old enough to "get a real job," to quit his whining, and to establish some kind of reasonable payback system to get himself out of debt.

As for anything invoking a homosexual angle to him, I heard nothing. And I think having some mislead and uncompassionate fag throwing $50k at him, then expecting him to turn his virgin boy bottom over to him is worse than pure fantasy. It is idiocy, it is abusive, it is wrong and it is foolish.

The boy needs help. Please, someone, give him the right kind. And that doesn't have the first thing to do with sex.

  21. GET OVER YOURSELFS!!! The boy is OFFERING himself for a YEAR!

We are in talks now...I will let you know the development!

Posted by: ANONYMOUS GAY MAN | Apr 25, 2005 10:09:53 PM

  22. MORRIS - You heard nothing because you did not speak to him, I DID, and that conversation will remain between HE and I - unless he comes to live here. If he does, he understands the terms...

  23. Not that I would bid...but I remember being like him when I was 21. Hating where I was and wanting to find and way out. 37 now and I still thank God for my first boyfriend that helped me escape. It's not easy for everybody to just drop everything and get up and leave..but it can happen.

  24. this sounds like just about the weirdest thing i've ever heard. it's like a Lifetime movie. this can only end poorly for anyone involved.

    Posted by: none | Apr 25, 2005 11:15:49 PM

  25. don't you think it's clear that this person is insane? do any of you who are in the least entertaining this boy's offer not see how this can only go horribly wrong? i mean, he will either end up hurting himself or others in hundreds of ways. it reminds me of "six degrees of separation," in some weird uncomfortable way. he needs help, alright, but not from a daddy or a sponsor. he needs a doctor or something.
