The Brokeback Tease Continues...

Some new shots have surfaced of the anticipated December gay cowboy flick Brokeback Mountain. They come courtesy of a promo trailer for Focus Features and offer more glimpses into the Ang Lee film. The film was recently turned down for consideration at the Cannes Film Festival, but then again, the committee has never been receptive towards any of Ang Lee's films.

Thankfully, we've seen nothing that would indicate that Lee has treated the subject matter with anything other than the grace it deserves. That said, we've hardly seen much at all and have yet to hear an ounce of dialogue...

...however...Towleroad has heard from a source that the film does feature a sex scene in a tent, apparently done tastefully but also explicitly!

The new stuff:

A beat up Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) drives away, checking his rearview mirror. Could these shiners be the result of the rough sex Jake so excitedly went on about?

Cowboy1

And who's in the rearview? Jack may be cruising the local gay strip but methinks it's the Ennis Jack is hungry for...

Cowboy2

Ennis del Mar (Ledger) kicks some cowboy ass at a rodeo (?) while Alma (Michelle Williams), Heath's real life squeeze, watches and cowers...

Cowboy9

That's how we treat fagbashers out here!

Cowboy4

Ennis gives a hug to somebody...

Cowboy5

Then broods and smokes, thinking of someone in a sexy pair of chaps...

Cowboy6

But who could concentrate on anything else with a dreamy face like this in his head all afternoon???

Cowboy7

Oh....the heartbreak of cowboys in the closet...

Cowboy8

Still, questions remain. Will this film be treated like Stone's Alexander and get gun shy on the gayness? Will there be a kiss (or a naked romp in the countryside?) between these two young stars? Will we be clapping with glee or hissing in distress when the final credits roll? We're counting on you Ang.

  1. There's no way Ang Lee could do this marvelous story justice without the cowboys engaging in some serious naked romping.

  2. Wasn't "Crouching Tiger...." a huge cannes success?

  3. Crouching Tiger screened and was a huge success with Cannes audiences but it was not selected by the committee for the official competition that year.

  4. What committee decides which film gets to join the official competition? The same committee who chose Salma Hayek as a member of the jury???

  5. Cannes has also stated that they deliberately stayed away from films with any political undertones because of the fervor created by Fahrenheit 9/11 last year. Regarding Ang Lee's unpopularity with Cannes, it is rumored that it began when he bitched that THE ICE STORM only took home a screenplay award in '97.
Chances are very good that the film will be chosen for the Venice Film Festival (who awarded VERA DRAKE the Golden Lion last year after Cannes rejected it - supposedly because it was too political).

  6. They both look amazing...I wonder how they aged them later in the movie???

  7. P.S. ALEXANDER was a ridiculous movie. Colin Farrell as Alexander the Great? And the gay subplot? It was just plain silly, all the way around. BROKEBACK is an entirely different kind of story, and it seems as if the two leads are pretty well cast. This is a tragic love story...ALEXANDER could have been complex and absorbing, but instead, it was a bad joke, on us, the audience.

  8. Brokeback Mountain is one of the best pieces of short fiction I’ve ever read. Speaking as a westerner, no writer since Hal Borland has captured the ethereal ache of the West as well as Annie Proulx. Mountains and plains have a terrible beauty and there can be few more perfect settings in which to describe the great gulf of hidden love. The story is so authentic that you are convinced that it is true. In fact, it is as near true as fiction can be. I love Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist. As gay men and as westerners, they are my brothers. Ang Lee had better not disrespect their story. There is a scene in the story when Jack comes to see Ennis after many years of being out of touch. Their crushing, clinging embrace and the blood on the lip of the kiss are the truth of the love that they share. This scene should be left essentially untouched as it will be, in my opinion, the scene around which the rest of the movie will pivot. It will be the key. If Ang Lee screws this up he will corrupt a precious story and I will be angry in my bones.

  9. I think someone who read the script said most of what's in the story is in the script...and hopefully the director KEPT those critical scenes in the film....we'll know soon, won't we?!?!?

  10. The blood during this pivotal reunion scene easily becomes a representation of unbridled emotional passion -- war re-ignited. Ang would not dissappoint here. Ennis and Jack are not merely Jefiction for many folks following their development. They have resided in the core of our hearts core for many years and Proulx has carefully coaxed them forth. Ang must follow.
