Love is a Force of Nature

Brokebackmountainonesheet

Hot, hot, hot. I've obtained a scan of the gorgeous new one-sheet for Brokeback Mountain. I'm loving that tagline. God, I hope the movie is good. It's almost surreal to me to see two big actors playing these parts...if Ang Lee pulls it off, this could be really remarkable.

  1. I think Andy is obsessed with this film (and I can see why).

  2. that tagline is amazing actually. I'm hoping it's done well too.

  5. Whoo... I think I want that poster for my room :)

  6. Call me cynical, but I'm anticipating scads of interviews with the stars in which they describe how uncomfortable it was to kiss another guy, the "no tongues" deal they made with each other before makeout scenes, etc., as if they never knew what they were getting into, and all to make sure we know they're still straight.

  8. Let's just hope it doesn't suck like "The Hulk." Ang Lee can be amazingly good...and amazingly bad.

  9. Ooh, I like! Thanks for posting it. Yeah, I too am praying the movie doesn't water down what is a very good short story.

  10. I don't know what closet I've been hiding in, but thanks Andy for bringing this one to my attention. Hope it gets a simultaneous release here in the UK.

Timothy, so far their interviews have been just the opposite, as following Andy's links has shown me; Gyllenhaal certainly has a good track record for being level headed and socially mature (and gay friendly) so it'd have been a surprise to me had he responded as you feared he might.

  11. I'm so on your wavelength Andy. I've been looking forward to this movie more than any other for most of the last 2 years. It has the potential to change many people's views on homosexuality forever. I have enough faith in Ang Lee to know that it will be good, but I pray that it's unforgettably excellent.
You're always first with the news on this film - that's how I first found your blog actually. Keep up the great coverage!

  12. What is so wonderful about the tagline is that they boldly state what the movie is about: LOVE.

No apologies. I adore it... just gorgeous.

  13. I too can't wait to see the movie. But what I am really waiting for is the evangicals. Are there going to be protests at movie theaters? So far they have been quiet, perhaps to quiet.

  14. Not sure if this has been mentioned, but I read that it's scheduled to have its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Information isn't listed on their site as yet.

  15. Oh, shit. I thought this was called BAREBACK MOUNTAIN. I'm losing interest rapidly ...

  16. I love Jakey too but really Andy, you've been getting SO coverage happy about this movie, I hope it lives up.

  17. Off-topic, but Canada just OFFICIALLY passed the same-sex marriage bill tonight. Even though it was passed by the House of Commons last month, it wasn't until the Senate approved it (which it did today) that it is a done deal. Bill will receive "royal assent" and become the law of the land tomorrow.

  18. I'm really hoping that the movie is great, also.

I recently was able to get a copy of the short story and read it on a flight to Calgary. The story has great potential. I did not, however, think that the story is very well written. Too many holes and leaps and jumps so that you have to interpret what is happening.

As a love story it could be one of the best ever and really could open the eyes of lots of people. I hope that Ang Lee stayed true to the intent of the theme and didn't do anything sensational.

What comes to mind is Michael Cunningham's "A Home at the End of the World." The book is tremendous but they dropped an important character and changed the ending by giving one of the major characters AIDS and destroying all of the hope with which the book ends.

  19. I am rooting for Ang Lee, too. He pulled off "The Wedding Banquet" and I hope he can do it again.

  21. Have any of you read Proulx's story yet?

    Posted by: e | Jul 20, 2005 9:12:12 AM

  22. Yes. I've read the story.
Its a very slim volume written in a very matter-of-factly way. The love story between the two men is more sexual than emotional -even though there is deep emotion running underneath. Don't forget these men are rugged cowboys in the sixties.
What i'm interested to see is how Ang Lee is going to film the lovemaking between the two and still got a R rating. In the pages of the book it's really intense and hot.

  23. Hey guys here is a link to the full story...Read it...It will only take less than an hour to read. I hope Ang Lee can make this into something special.

  24. A beautiful poster for the film. I'm hoping too that the film is as good Prioux's book. But I wonder if one day we'll get Hollywood to produce a gay love story that doesn't end in a gay-bashed death.

  25. ANDY - Focus Features has asked JoBlo to take the poster down... apparently it wasn't the final version:
