Play Ball!
Seeing as the Yanks and Red Sox are "neck and neck," Weekly Dig editor Joe Keohane thought he would create a bit of controversy by shooting this photo for the cover of the Boston paper: "We wanted to see what would piss people off more – the gay aspect or the Sox-Yanks aspect. And we wanted to float the theory that sexual tension is the real force behind the heated Sox-Yanks rivalry."
I think he hit one out of the park!

there are two types of people i am likely never to date:
1) republicans.
2) yankees fans.
that said, this picture is genius and (almost) makes me sad not to live in new england anymore.

Thats a great pic and very hot. As a gay baseball fan, I love this picture. It makes me all tingly, now if they can just get a actual baseball played to do that....

It's great to see the hometown alt-weekly push the buttons every once in a while. It's a brilliant picture precisely because so much of the language involved in the two team's rivalry is based on sexual innuendo (i.e., Yankees Suck, Jeter sucks A-Rod, etc.)

A few years ago, there was a billboard in Ireland that was similar to this cover. It features two footballers (soccer players) from rival teams kissing on the field. It had the tag "Relax. It's a gay thing." The Commercial Closet has an image of it:

It's nice that they used "Realistic" looking men in the shot too, instead of restorting to stereotypcial gay models.

As a die-hard Sox fan in NYC, I couldn't love this cover more: it's brilliant. And, by the way, the Yankees will get spanked.
