Best gay blog. Towleroad Wins Award

10/24/2005

Ladies with an Attitude

I know you're probably suffering from a bit of Madonna fatigue but Towleroad has received some exclusive, never-before-seen photos of her Madgesty that just need to be shared. The photos were taken on September 7, 1990 by our ever-resourceful correspondent Alan L. and show Madonna relaxing after a performance of "Vogue" as Marie Antoinette at the Wiltern Theater in L.A. for an AIDS Project Los Angeles benefit. This was just before the release of her first concert documentary Truth or Dare.

Madonna is seen here with then (rumored) boyfriend Tony Ward as well as Donna DeLory and dancers from her tour. Alan says: "After I took the first two photos Madonna spoke to me. Well, in a manner of speaking. She swore at me. She said, 'You fucking stop taking my picture. You keep doin' that. You didn't even ask me.' She's right, I didn't. I didn't want to barge up and interrupt her table conversation with Tony Ward and the others. And I was afraid she'd say no. I snapped another picture as she got up to leave. You can clearly see Ricki Lake looking on in admiration."

  2. Do we have to like Madonna when we're gay? I'm sorry, her new single just doesn't do it for me: not very original to say the least.

  3. seriously, 15 year-old Maddona pics?

  4. Thanks for the look back. She has had more lives than a cat, and I've pretty much enjoyed every one. I thought her new single was unexceptional at first but after listening to it again, then again, I really like it now. Thx.

  5. Madonna never did it for me. Too commercial, too TOO. My heart belonged to Siouxsie.
When do you go back to your Jake Gyllenhaal obsession? That was more fun.

  6. I don't mind looking at more Madonna and I particularly enjoy seeing Tony Ward. Whatever happened to him????

  10. Not only did Tony Ward used to live in the apartment building behind me in Hollywood, he was dating a good friend of mine and dumped her when Madge came along...
he was a really nice guy when he wasn't
    f-ed up..(which was a lot)...
and to quote Jerri Blank, Tony "liked the pole AND the hole".

  12. Tony Ward? What about that Brooklyn guy the Cher/ghoul used like an Antonio Banderas blow-up doll? Where are HIS pics, people?
    Beyond that:
    - Tony Ward in these photos puts me in mind of Paris H. That is, the word 'skank' leaps to mind the very nanosecond the retinas take in the image.
    - Why is Madonna now called 'Madge'? Is it because she's middle-aged? And, if that's the reason, why don't we call her 'Mildred'? 'Mildred' is an awfully nice name.
    - Madonna's new single is not a good song. It is not even a good dance song. I am in fact going to analyze very intently how it is that mediocre crap is heard/seen to be far more than that, merely because She did it.

  13. Seeing Ward as a pathetic poster boy for degradation desperately beating off in a bathtub in "Sex/Life in LA" made me question not just Madonna's taste but class, too. NOT a pretty picture.

  14. Thanks for the links to the Tony Ward stuff. All of that was still years ago. What is he doing today? Anybody know?

And for what it's worth, I do like Madonna's new song - it's very upbeat and fun - and will be buying her CD.

  16. Seeing Madonna captured in life from my favorite era of her career is always great. It is worth noting for younger readers that Madonna was a radical global icon, especialy during the timeline captured in the photos. She had the timeless look and appeal of Marilyn Monroe which bridged generations. But most importantly, she let the public constantly know that she embraced the gay community. All of us should remember the important role she played to help bring the gay community into the mainstream. She took a very big risk doing this early in her career. For her valiant and bold support, I will always be grateful.

  17. She really looks beautiful in that second picture.

  18. she kinda looks like J.Lo in that one picture. With the larger facial features over-emphasized by the makeup. I like the pictures though. thanks Andy.

  19. "ll of us should remember the important role she played to help bring the gay community into the mainstream. She took a very big risk doing this early in her career. For her valiant and bold support, I will always be grateful."

She supported us? I think not. She used us to titillate the masses. Nope, we were exploited to make her famous.
