London Man Beaten to Death in Brutal Anti-Gay Attack

Claphamcommon

LondonmurderClapham Common in South London was the site of a "a sustained and violent attack" on a 24-year-old barman that left him unconscious late Friday night. The victim, Jody Dobrowski, died early Saturday after being brought to a hospital.

Based on the reports of people in the area who heard shouts around the time of the murder, the police are classifying the attack as homophobic. Chief Inspector: "This attack was abhorrent and the victim was assaulted violently." The victim had been with friends near the common until around 10:15 Friday evening.

Two suspects are still at large. Police describe them as in their 20's and worry that they may strike again. "One is thought to be about 6ft tall with short shaved hair and the other slightly shorter and stockier. Police believe between eight and ten people were in the wooded area where Mr Dobrowski was found between 11pm and 1am. They are urged to come forward with any information they have and to eliminate themselves from the inquiry."

Clapham Common is known as a cruising area for gay men, and has recently seen a series of muggings and robberies involving attackers posing as cruisers.

  1. Clapham Common again...I tell you, unless you have a sex obsession coupled with a death wish, I don't know why you'd go in there at night. I know another barman who was beaten to within an inch of his life there a few years ago, and the stories don't stop there. Sad that people feel the need to go to such dangerous places to get off. If they have a danger fetish, they'll sure get their rocks off in that park...one of the most beautiful spots in London by day, and you couldn't pay me to go near it at night.

  2. Beck507,

I agree that in so far as personal safety is concerned, it's prudent to be mindful of ones surroundings and have an enhanced degree of situational awareness. I don't believe your intention was to paint the victim as someone who was sex obsessed, with a death wish, and requiring pity. Though whatever the intention, the man is dead. Apparently at the hands of someone who thinks that there is something inherent about gay people that requires their execution.

I would suggest focus the attention on the reasons it is wrong to attack other human beings on the basis of maladaptive issues of sexuality! In other words, focus the criminality of the crime on the criminal, not the man who won't be seeing family or friends again.

We all know to be aware of where we are, especially at night, but there are many variables we would only know had we been there. Sadly the only one who can fill us on on those, is the person who killed this man.

  3. No mercy for these brutes who murdered the guy.

But many in the gay community still equate sexual promiscuity with gay liberation in general. Irresponsible nonsense.

Within the gay community, sexual addiction runs rampant. The reasons are obvious given the history of our treatment and ostracization by society. Nevertheless, now that we are gaining inclusion and being welcomed as equals, we need to face it as the chronic serious problem that it is.

    See the 20 Questions (http://www.sca-recovery.org/20questions.htm)

Fortunately, in places like NYC, one the most active self-help groups is Sexual Compulsives Anonymous (SCA). I'd say it is the most popular group at the NYC Gay Center. Why? Because sexual addiction warps and distorts the addict, like any other addiction, in order to feed itself. Many gay men, when given the chance and all the information, realize they are sex addicts who need help freeing themselves from obsessive internet porn, chat rooms, bookstores, or serial one night stands.

Unfortunately, most gay communities are completely ignorant of the nature of sexual addiction and pass it off as only afflicting others. Too bad. Sexual addiction robs the addict of healthy views of sexuality and intimacy. Often sex addicts are unable to maintain long-term relationships.

Gay people are not from Mars and so we are vulnerable to the same excesses as all others on this planet. Sexual addiction is the vice of many who otherwise lead sober, drug-free lives. Yet given the chemical reactions exploding in the brain during sex, it is merely swapping one drug for another.

Sex is healthy and should be enjoyed. Sex can be fun and freeing. But like anything else, it has consequences. When it's rendered a meaningless transaction only about pleasure, it pretty much becomes another form of recreational drug use. And there begins the descent into unbalanced addictive compulsive sex which often leads us to dangerous places.

  4. Patrick,

I have to ask: Your rather lengthy attempt at justifying puritanical based belief structures in the name of "addiction", is relevznt to the topic of a gay man being killed on account of his sexual orientation, exactly how?

Or perhaps you are just assuming he was promiscuious, into obsessive internet porn, chat rooms, bookstores or those evil "serial" one night stands, whatever you were intending there. A one night stand really can't be anything but serial by definition can it?

I repeat, you know nothing about this man, and you demonstrate that by mentioning him in one sentance only. Your first. While I would love to challange your assertions regarding my right to engage in autonomous sexual encounters, as I see fit and with whom I see fit, the reality that this topic thread is about antigay violence manifesting in murder, is a reality that sticks with me. With appropriate respect, I defer to another time.

  5. Kudos to Steve...Stay on message men. Damn; Patrick, hasn't anyone in a 12 Step fellowship ever mentioned to you the tradition of a public policy that is based on attraction NOT promotion? Moreover, personal recovery depends on anonymity at a level of press, radio and film, umm and this kinda counts as press...So, before you pontificate, with your full name, from your very new soapbox; learn a little restraint of pen and tongue. And, develop a modicum of respect for a man who was the victim of a vicious crime, not to mention his friends and family. You have no right to make any assumptions about anyone's sexual behaviour except your own. Sheesh.

  6. Steve,

Actually, I am going to continue to focus my attention on three things:

    1) catching the assholes who did this to a human -- who's as yet to be determined queer.

    2) the sad fact that in 2005 some gay men still feel they need to seek sex in truly dangerous locations through ignorance/self-loathing/kinky fetish/thrill-of-danger reasons.

    3) why Clapham Common can't be better patrolled by police for safety.

Steven, until you've spent many, many nights living by Clapham Common -- as I have -- you don't focus on the non-accustatory, PC angle. This warm-and-fuzzy view is literally battered out of your consciousness by the stories you hear from locals whilst tipping pints in Clapham pubs, about attacks on them or others.

I tell you, you wonder why the hell the police can't make it safer....and why these blokes keep going in there for a cock they could smoke at a sauna (and just as anonymously).

And don't assume I didn't think this poor dead guy didn't have a death wish. Maybe he did. Or at least he had a death-don't-worry-me wish. Doesn't matter what he had -- somebody killed him and they deserve to be caught, tried and convicted.

People keep going into that poark at night and they know they could die.

    Why?

  7. This guy was murdered. The scum who did it should rot.

The circumstances surrounding his murder, as I read them, brought to my mind an important issue - that of sex addiction.

Steve and Beh are entitled to their opinion and will of course critique my reasoning in any way they see fit. However, other than their being upset that I didn't "stay on message" and - I guess - emote only anger and outrage, I find their objections to my thoughts misplaced.

While my thoughts arose from thinking about the murder and the circumstances, Steve was exactly right when he said that "I know nothing about this man". I didn't pretend otherwise. Hmmmmm.

So back to what I did say:

Sexual addiction runs rampant in the gay community. Too many gay teens grow up in a gay subculture which relentlessly and excessively promotes promiscuity as not just without consequence but admirable. While I understand that sex between two consenting adults can be beautiful and fun and freeing and that having a one night stand doesn't make one a sex addict, I also understand that sex, just like alcohol and marijuana, can be used to excess.

The gay community does have a problem with excessive promiscuity. More programs like SCA ought to be available to our community. More people need to speak out. The problem is too big and too important to let others' discomfort, denial or thought policing get in the way.

Like any drug, sex can be addictive. Some people are good at moderating their use while others, for various reasons, easily spiral into addiction.

I know the gay community as well as anyone. In many cities and towns, there are few if any voices decrying the repurcussions of binge promiscuity. SCA is a public website. It's message is important. I have every right to blog it, mention it and talk about it. I have betrayed no one's confidence.

  8. I am with Patrick re: sex addiction in the gay communities. Hear hear.

  9. Patrick --

I think what people are responding to is the kind of breezy way in which you respond to this very brutal murder by suggesting that promiscuity and/or sexual addiction may have been partly responsible for Dobrowski's death. While, as you note, we don't know what went on, it's a disturbing reaction, in the same way that commenting on the short skirt and tight blouse a woman was wearing the night she was raped is disturbing.

Some people are sex addicts. Some people are drug addicts. Some people drink too much. Some people eat too much.

None of them deserves to be beaten to death as a result of their addictive behavior. Equally none of them deserves to have such a death cheapened by someone else using it as a platform from which to lecture about a tangetially related pet peeve or cause.

It doesn't matter WHY Mr. Dobrowski was wandering about Clapham Common or WHAT he was doing. Sexual addict, secret molester of squirrels or just a guy taking a short cut to the Tube station -- the horror (and the thing to stay focused on BECAUSE IT'S A LOT MORE IMPORTANT THAN SEX ADDICTION AND PROMISCUITY ISSUES) is that he shouldn't have been beaten to death.

We should all be able to wear short skirts, get drunk, or even have a little nookie in the park if we choose to without having to worry about being maimed or MURDERED as a result of it. Maybe we should suffer other consquences (wolf whistles, the drunk tank, a fine for public exposure) and I'm sure there are lots of people who could benefit from 12-step programs who aren't in them.

But the idea that anyone's response to such a murder is to think "How tragic! But, you know, a lot of gay men are promicuous sex addicts" is frightening and feels a little homophobic. I have to wonder if you would have had the same reaction if the story were about a straight teenaged couple shot to death while making out in Central Park.

  10. Historical note. One assumes there are some Towleroaders who watch televised figure skating. Come on, there must be a couple, even if your names aren't Jack and Grace--though who can forget Karen's classic "Skate faster! We've got reservations!"? Anyway, many years before Rudy Galindo taught Jack a new sit spin, Olympic gold medalist and commentator Dick Button sustained permanent hearing loss in his left ear and the indentation still visible in his forehead as the the result of a ferocious gay bashing in the Rambles in Central Park. Five others were also attacked. Note, we have no direct knowledge that Mr. Button kisses boys. If he doesn't, he would not be the first or last victim assumed to be gay [years ago, an undercover cop, sexuality unknown, in Houston's gay Montrose section, there specifically to catch bashers, was bashed himself]. In fact, the "New York Times" went out of its way in 1978 to mention that Button, who said he was in the area only because he was jogging, was married with two children. Button, and/or his brother did put up a $10,000 reward. That, and his fame/connections, IMHO, resulted in some 75 cops, including here, too, some undercover, becoming involved in the hunt for the six very young males [some legally juveniles]. They were caught, and their still bloodied baseball bats recovered. The apparent leader had 19 prior arrests, including "sodomy." He said that this attack followed an incident earlier in the evening in which he'd gotten into an argument with a gay man in the park who bit him on the cheek [we could find no explanation of exactly how alleged biter had gotten so close....] Other interesting facts: at one point during the 1979 trial, noticing his mother apparently fainting, he fought four cops, injuring two, trying to get to her, all the while screaming homophobic slurs. His lawyer actually said to the jury, "Now, I wouldn't suggest for a second that beating up fags was a legitimate summer sport in New York City or anywhere else." When the verdict was read, one juror, as some jurors did the same year 3000 miles away when the verdicts for the *killer of Harvey Milk and SF Mayor George Moscone were announced, wept. Note, however, that while some think he should have gotten more, the 5-15 years he did get was less than what *Dan White got. Do people still cruise the Rambles? There are certainly still plenty of fag bashers to go around, as the recent L.I.E. attacks demonstrate. Any New Yorkers know what happened to the main bad apple in the savage attack on Button et al.? No position on public sex, addictive or non, necessarily intended or implied, but it fascinates me how little, or how much, depending on which aspect one considers, has changed in 27 years.

  12. Mea culpa: "the 5-15 years he did get was less than what *Dan White got" should have read "MORE than what *Dan White got." And, I failed to give credit for details from "New York Times" accounts researched by someone at http://www.iceskatingforum.com/figure/The_Dick_Button_1978_bashingas_the_New_York_Times_reported_it_completewarning_it_is_LONG_432674.html

  13. Buster - I understand your reaction. Nevertheless, mine remains undiminished.

Your characterization of my thoughts as 'breezy' and 'homophobic' is specious.

  14. As Jody's friend, I can tell you all that he was not some kind of sex addict or pervert patrolling the park or whatever else anyone wants to suggest. He had no death wish or anything like that. He was a loving caring friend who did not 'come out' in Cardiff but waited till he went to London and now look what's happened. He loved life and his friends and we are all going to deeply miss him. RIP Jody, our thoughts are with you and we hope you're in a better place. Let's hope they catch the evil monsters that did this.

  15. Patrick,

I see my points surrounding the most appropriate time to launch a discussion about the concerning aspect of some gay mens sexual realities was lost on you. That's not surprising. It's clear the intention you demonstrate is not one that is concerned with homophobia manifesting in brutal violence, it is the more insidious kind that is launched by assertions of moral worth in direct proportion to who, how often, where, and what type of sex, specific gay man are having.

In turn, you translate the reality of specific individual gay men into a cultural one, and start in with the sky is falling routine, or the very disempowered sex "addiction" yarn. As a nurse practitioner completing a PhD in public health, I have to point out the oversimplification in your assertion surounding the varying degrees to which the neuronal mediation by way of seratonin and dopamine regulation sexual chemistry in the human brain. While I suppose a cute theory, the biolgical basis for sex addiction remains a theory on par with a visit from the inhabitants of Mars. As it is unlikely we become addicted to naturally occuring hormones released in response to body system function.

Attempting to portray me as a radical leftist hell bent on upholding PC rhetoric above all else may seem like solid stategy, however it is misguided. My point was not in your right to challange current models of gay community cultural currency that relate to a hyper reliance and objectification of sex. I support your right to do that, as I support the right of men and women to have the type of sex you seem allergic to. I support both of you since freedom of speech is a value I place in high regard. That means that the drivel which informs the anti sex crowd, must be given the same platform as a civil rights pronouncement. The concept, and the test for accuracy, is if it doesn't feel right. Because it shouldn't. But when the concept respects my and your rights alike, someones feelings are going to get hurt. I accept that. Do you?

My original point Patrick, which you have chosen to ignore, was the time and place for you to launch your demonstraion of sex being simply a virgin/ whore paradigm. Something you have chosen not to address, except for two sentances in your two lengthy responses. Take a tip from old guard "radical" feminism Patrick. That specific virgin/whore dynamic I refer to, was one of the most powerful tools used to turn women against each other on the basis of percieved moral worth, while nicely avoiding the men who constructed that false system of viewing sexual engagement. Interesting how that works. Sex is not bad Patrick. Even if, god forbid, it is only for pleasure. Misintention, deception, or hidden agendas are my markers for a low moral equation in relation to sexual engagement. Not the frequancey of encounter.

  16. To Jess,

Sincere condolences on the loss of your friend. I am truly sorry for your loss. And good for you for standing up for Jody. Don't let a pissing match between a couple of freekin' eejits distract you from knowing most people are as horrified as you are, and share your sorrow.

  17. Jess,
Very sorry to hear about your friend, and thank you for introducing some actual facts into the discussion.

As for the intellectual debate, though, I gotta call it game, set, and match for Steve. Plus, I think I want his phone number. Of course, I'm a sex addict, so whaddya expect?

  18. Hi Jess,

Just a quick note to thank you for posting some insight into who your friend was, and what he was about. I offer you thoughts and positive energy right now.

For what it's worth, I also offer you an apology for my part in doing what I intendted only to call out, taking the focus squarely off Jody. After re reading above, I can see how that occured to a degree. That was not my intention. All the best.

  19. Jess, My condolences. What happened to Jody is a tragedy and despicable. From your description, he was a person we all would have been better for knowing. My turn onto the topic of sexual addiction is obviously irrelevant to his story but as happens in a free flowing conversation in the comments section of a topical blog, the discussion merged onto a different path.

As for Steve, I sympathize with his anger and passion. The subject of sex addiction is one some in the gay community are unwilling to face rationally and too often are unable to react without overemotional defensiveness. For some gay men, mentioning sex in any context outside of a celebratory one is suspect. This seems to be Steve's issue.

Nonetheless, my points on sex addiction and its continuing rampage through the gay community remain reality-based. Many gay teens do find a 'whore' paradigm, as Steve puts it, awaiting them within the gay community. Too little discussion is given to a more moderate approach to sex.

While Steve masturbates his righteousness about all things sexual with pedantic arguments, other gay people like me are standing up and simply saying that sex has consequences. We are speaking to gay teens and simply saying yes enjoy sex but don't be naive about the dangers of substituting it for meaning or emotional intimacy. We are speaking to gay teens and simply saying moderation is good and not, in fact, 'anti-sex'.

As for me, I love sex. No doubt, it is a good thing. And I believe we can all agree that gay teens in the process of coming out deserve more guidance from the gay community itself. Blogs like this provide just such a resource where, in this instance, perspectives about sexuality - as they relate to promiscuity, emotional intimacy, addiction and pleasure - can be discussed.

  20. Stop the dogmatic howls Patrick. We disagree, and that's ok. If you want to continue this debate, do it on my blog. As I said, it is in bad taste here since we are not relating the dialouge to the young man who was murdered, as well as the lack of merit in a recently recovered "sexual compulsive" having the nerve to make sweeping pronouncements around others sexual deportment. Enough.

  21. Patrick,
Please, please seek a therapist. You are self centered in the extreme. You lack even the most remedial concept of decorum and respect for a life lost. In short (something you are uncapable of), you're a selfish whiner. Give it a rest.

    To Jess,

God Rest Jody, and sincere condolences on your tragic loss. Peace all ways, Jeff
