Exclusive: Homophobes Who Can't Spell

Brokebackfootball

Towleroad correspondent Christopher sent in this photo from the Seahawks—Panthers game over the weekend. It seems that Brokeback Mountain has worked its way into the sports lexicon.

Spreading a bigoted message really backfires when you can't spell it.

  1. I don't get the signs, probably because I've never subscribed to moron mob mentality at sporting events (I only watch football for the butt pats).

I do get "Details" and in the new issue(with delicious Matthew Mcconaughey on the cover), in the feature "Know + Tell", they have "Slang: brokeback adj. Descriptor for any activity performed together by two heterosexual men. ... Usage: "Where's Bob?" "Oh, he's out brokeback bowling with Dale.".

At first I was offended by Details, but you know... if using the term "brokeback" is going to help hetero males get comfortable with "guy dates"... why not?

Oh, the TIDE is TURNING! First, Oprah with her men on the "Down Low", now "brokeback"! I a gay urge coming over me.

  2. http://www.ucomics.com/boondocks/2006/01/22/

brokeback was also featured in this past sunday's boondocks. boondocks can be pretty funny sometimes, but i thot this one was kinda pointless.

  3. I have read that "boondocks" comic strip before, and have never found it to be funny or even interesting. The creator of boondocks, Aaron McGruder, is kind of an "angry liberal" and a good example of someone with whose political views I generally agree, but who manages to be a liberal and a homophobe at the same time.

And as far as "brokeback" being a term used to, as McGruder puts it, describe anything of questionable masculinity, I'd like to see him square off against any gay cowboy I've ever known. They'd kick his ass.

  4. Maybe they just have good taste in movies.

  5. Boondocks did a whole series of strips where the grandfather is trying to explain gay marriage to the kids, he is uncomfortable, but the kids make it out to be the most natural thing in the world. That does not seem homophobic at all.

  6. If we're seeing signs (although misspelled) on an NFL football field, the message is reaching the masses. The story brings a strong, universal message that can't be so easily dismissed. Still, with some macho idiots, name calling is always best.

  11. I'm going to extrapolate on Larry's remark - it could be a general attack on Ang Lee, and we just didn't get the pics of the banners reading, 'Panthers Like Shitty Films like HULK!', and 'Panthers Own DVDs of ICE STORM!'

    (Sorry - 'STROM')

  12. If you want to read a bunch of yahoo (rednecks)remarks about brokeback mountain and the redneck agenda, follow this link and please feel free to add your own comments... This is from a newspaper in a small town in Georgia that is owned by the Baptists and Republicans.

  13. I know Aunt Tomikas' don't like us using the 'H' word because it makes straight people uncomfortable, but if I didn't know better I'd swear that sign was a clear case of homophobia.

  16. What kind of moron athlete holds up that kind of sign? They know they're in the public eye, and subject to public scrutiny. Did they think no one would be offended? I hope the local press held him accountable.
