Boy George: Caught Between a Rock and a Hard On

Boy_goerge_fashion

Boy George closed London fashion week with his B-Rude collection. Unfortunately, because he's been spending so much time in Manhattan court rooms, it appears he forgot to make any clothes.

Kidding aside (I'm sure those models are wearing something aside from a hat), he did have time to sit down for an interview with the Evening Standard.

Boy George on tolerance:

"We live in a culture that pretends to accept and understand, but which doesn't want to deal with the finer details of gay culture. Just because you have a few queers in Emmerdale, there is this myth that the world has become more tolerant. It doesn't understand us at all. I have asked a lot of straight men about Brokeback Mountain and they said they couldn't relate to it."

On gay marriage:

"Gay unions, what is that about? I haven't been invited to any ceremonies, and I wouldn't go anyway. The idea that gay people have to mimic what obviously doesn't work for straight people any more ... I think is a bit tragic. I am looking-forward to gay divorces."

On his type:

"I always fell for straight boys. The more macho the better."

On the cocaine charges against him:

"I'm not worried at all. I will possibly go back in March, hopefully later. Adversity can be good for you."

  1. I've always been a fan of Boy George (his soulful voice is a real gift from God), but what does it say about "tolerance" -- namely his own self-acceptance -- when he describes his type as "straight" and the "more macho the better."

Like it's so admirable to fall for guys who cheat on you with women instead of men and who aren't emotionally available to you at all?

Sounds like Boy might wanna work on his own issues and allow those of us who choose to "get married" do so without his warped input. Marriage isn't for all straight people -- nor is it for all gays and lesbians.

  2. Georgie Boy has had his fifteen minutes of fame, though he still has'nt learned much about the real world, and the inequity towards same sex couples.
Civil Unions give same sex couples equal legal rights under British law.
Gay and lesbian British citizens living in Australia can now take out a British Civil Union with their overseas partners, giving both of them equal rights in the UK. Options they never had before.

  3. Gee Andy. If it weren't for you, I don't think anyone would even know this guy was still alive.

You have quite the nose for obscure news.

  4. From the last interview I saw with BG, he was still, all these years later, nuts about Jon (drummer for Culture Club, and on the straight side).

My point being, if Jon asked, George would be showing off his ring and on the phone to caterers in a fucking heartbeat.

  5. "The idea that gay people have to mimic what obviously doesn't work for straight people any more ... I think is a bit tragic."

No, what is tragic is that a lot of gay people like Boy George STILL don't get it. You don't want to get married? Then don't. But why would you not want the legal OPTION to do so? Legalized same sex marriage is about equal rights for all, not about pushing gays to marry.

    Sheesh.

  7. Why can't I get this image out of my head: BG doing lines of coke on those flat model tummies.

  8. what a pathetic loser. does he really not see how revolting it is to undermine gay marriage because we shouldn't want to be like straight people and then in the next breath admit his obsession with heterosexual men? the words 'tragic self-hating throwback' don't even begin...

  10. "I always fell for straight boys. The more macho the better."

I don’t see why that’s offensive to anyone, even to the more effeminate of us. This is his preference in men. It’s a type we ourselves have branded as “straight acting.” It’s no more offensive than a macho guy saying he’s attracted to big sissies like Boy George.

    On his issue with gay unions;

I remember when the gay marriage thing was heating up in SF in 2004 and a local station went to the Castro to interview gays about it. One guy said very vehemently, "No, absolutely not. We've gone far enough. Gay marriage is crossing the line." He said it like he was so offended. This is what I'm supposed to be tolerant of? I’m the bad guy if I lose patience with this kind of crap and declare that I have no respect for this mindset?

    I’ll always like Boy George despite his recent low-rent-Elton-John act of making outlandish statements to make the press (seems someone who might go to prison for cocaine possession would try and avoid drawing so much attention to themselves.) But to hear him making comments like;

"Gay unions, what is that about? The idea that gay people have to mimic what obviously doesn't work for straight people any more ... I think is a bit tragic.”

…is only saved by the last comment…

“I am looking-forward to gay divorces."

…which indicates that he is perhaps being intentionally provocative.

What’s tragic – besides knowing that most of what you say is the result of a 20 year-long addiction to illicit drugs – is to hear gay people adopt traditional anti-gay rhetoric and use it against other gay people for the most flippant of reasons. It’s insulting to insinuate yourself into my life and suggest you know why I place value on any particular social tradition. If you don’t want to get married bitch don’t get married. This is another pathetic position like responding to the ban on gays in the military by saying, “Who wants to join the military anyway?” Just because you don’t value an institution doesn’t mean you should campaign against extending the right to other gays who do want to join the military, do want to adopt children, and do want to get married.

Ultimately, his comment won’t resonate with anyone because anyone who’s bothering to pay attention to him these days at least knows he’s no bastion of philosophical depth or integrity whether it’s on gay issues or anything else.

  11. I think people are reading too much into George's comments. He doesn't really want gay people to get divorced if they get married.
He's just trying to be funny and to get attention in the media. I feel sorry for him because he used to be the most famous person in the world. He obviously misses the fame, so he's doing the only thing he can think of to get his name in the paper.
    He's just having a laugh, it's harmless.

  13. IT'S UNIMPORTANT IF THE LOSERS ON THIS FORUM BELIEVE THAT I AM THE PERSON RESPONDING TO THEIR DULL OBSERVATIONS....' MISS MY 15 MINUTES' 'DOING LINES OF COKE OF FLAT STOMACHS' ...CHAD HANGING IS THE BIGGEST TWAT OF ALL AND YES GAY MARRIAGE IS SERIOUSLY CONFORMIST WHICH IS WHY I FIND IT SO TRAGIC. IT'S FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COMMON OR GARDEN AND NOT THOSE WHO MAKE THEIR SEXUAL DIFFERENCE A PROUD STATEMENT.
I WISH THE PLAGUE ON ALL OF YOU!

  14. Wow! Now that's (see post above) tragic.

Either you are a psychotically obsessed fan or Boy George needs to get a life.
