Introducing the Ipod "Macro"?

Worlds_largest_ipod

Is this a surprise meant to coincide with Apple's 30th anniversary next month? We'll know soon enough. This 220-acre monstrosity has been built on the site of an abandoned mine in a remote part of western Australia.

According to Gizmodo, this is the story behind the massive ad: "When Apple CEO Steve Jobs won an abandoned mineral mine in western Australia in a poker game from late Australian publishing and gaming tycoon Kerry Packer, he reportedly asked that the first advertisement capable of being seen from space be created there."

See it on Google Maps.

  1. Andrew-

You make this sexagenarian prelate laugh at the esoteric melange that you present every week on your blog.

You always have enough appetizers, certainly meat as well as potatoes, and the dessert is usually delightful.

    Thank you,

Now I will say grace before any more meals...

  2. Actually..."first advertisement capable of being seen from space" can be argued...Check out this google map photo of the Walt Disney World Speedway in Orlando...It's reservoir is shaped like Mickey Mouse ears.

  3. In reality...The Great Wall of China can't actually be seen from outer space, as that is a myth, or little other such details we might consider considerably big. If one is considering how the world is seen from outer space through a satelite, a license plate can be zoomed in on from some salelite's so it all relative. Now, if this Ipod ad was meant to be able to be seen on a website such as "Google Earth", then it is a smart and clever way of advertising a project, but even on a site like Google Earth not all rural areas areas ae able to be seen in good resolution, but apparently the above photo shows this area has been.

  4. Did anyone even check the Google Map before spreading this around? That photo is obviously doctored.

Zoom in on the google map and then compare to that photo.

  6. Actually, if you look to the right on the satellite image, you will see two structures side by side that look exactly like the white lower portion of the "I-Pod." In truth, I believe what you are looking at is what they call a waste pool used for toxic arsenic laced water which they use in the leaching process to help remove the metals from the crushed rock. If you zoom in, you will see that the center of the white square contains the dried up center of what was once a waste pond and if you look at the pool above it that looks like a screen you will see a dark center that is shaped exactly like the dried up pool next to it. These structures also look exactly like the structures in the dried up waste pools to the right of the "I-Pod."
