Rep: Jake Gyllenhaal & Austin Nichols Not a Gay Couple

You may have seen this series of photos of Jake Gyllenhaal and Austin Nichols at a Lakers game that surfaced a while ago and led to rampant speculation on the nature of their relationship. Well, the Brokeback-fueled hysteria has finally culminated in a statement from Jake's rep:

"Gay fans of Jake Gyllenhaal are determined to claim the "Brokeback Mountain" star as their own. Blogosphere gossips have been claiming that Gyllenhaal was ready to admit he was having trouble quitting actor Austin Nichols, whom he has known since high school. But sorry, guys, there won't be any coming-out party. Even though Jake is now split with Kirsten Dunst and Nichols broke off his engagement to Claire Oswalt, Gyllenhaal's rep says he and Nichols are just friends."

Nothing like a good denial to keep the ball rolling.

  1. It's Mike Piazza all over again... in my mind, Jake will always be playing for our team ;)

  2. Come on... There's finally a big name actor in a serious gay film, and he's rewarded by what? The same old closet-case rumors.

    Cut it out guys.

  3. HUH, I wholly concur!

Mike Piazza, on the other hand... I'm here Mike!

  4. However, gay rumors are usually a sign that an actor has arrived.

  5. true--but jeez lets just drool and otherwise leave him alone--if anyone gives his all in movies these days its Jakey--so lets just be great fans--and cut the crap

  6. I aggree, but GAWD, could they BE any cuter?

  7. The thing I find very cool about the statement is what it doesn't say. Jake is not saying "I'm not gay!", as if there would be something wrong with being gay. This represents a maturity usually not seen. It simply says that he and Austin are just friends. Let's leave him alone and not be fueling rumour mills that serve no one.

  8. It is not helping anymore to let gay celebrities stay in the closet for their whole careers. Maybe 10 years ago it was still cool, but it is time for them all to come out. Society needs to understand how many famous people are gay.

  9. Note to Every Straight Actor: This is what you can expect from the gay community..Every time you show any affection towards your male friends it will be considered that you MUST be in a relationship, a gay relationship, your closeted, and most likely you are not even aware of these things. The rabid gay community is so keen on outing everyone (does it make the world less lonely?)..we are the paparazzi of sexual behavior apparently. It's sad really. Why on earth what one does in privacy is anybodys business. This doesn't apply to politicians who, quite remarkably, will vote against gay rights (usually called gay republicans), that's an different matter entirely, but film celebrities, singers, dancers, writers, directors...give em a break.

  10. agreed--but do we know Jake is gay????? He hasnt sucked my cock!

  11. It is so pathetic and demeaning to continually imply that some celebrity is (a closeted) gay. it

Is this what we have evolved into? Lame. And sad.

Why don't we all just collectively grow up?

  12. "However, gay rumors are usually a sign that an actor has arrived." or that they`re gay?

I disagree with outing generally, but I do believe that all these celebrities and singers and actors and sportsmen would make a huge difference if they just came out - our visibility, not just as a "gay community", but throughout "their" community would increase a trillion-fold. The celebrity closet locks us all in.

  13. Ah, I still have the fantasy that the gay rumors about Jakey are one big publicity stunt... courting gay rumors instead of doing the usual "Have you met my girlfriend/wife? You've got to meet my girlfriend/wife. Let's talk about my girlfriend/wife." tour that straight actors in gay roles usually take.

"Eh, so maybe I am -- I'm not saying." would be a revolutionart tactic.

  14. Frankly dunno whether hes gay or not and considering the Hollywood stigma around the issue I understand why he wouldnt say and I think we should respect that. Theres a time and place for everything!!! Lets just enjoy these pics because the 2 of them just look so damn hot together and what will be will be.... wouldnt you agree???

  15. (assume deep deep voice) Come on, guys! Who says male friends are not supposed to sit that close? If you feel comfortable with one another, you tend to sit that close. And you don't even notice it.

  16. Question: If Tom Cruise or John Travolta were to come out as being gay, how would that help the gay community after so many years of denial and lawsuits?

    Posted by: Greg | Apr 11, 2006 2:12:39 PM

  17. two things. first, that looks strikingly like tom brady. and second, in reference to a hillarious SNL sketch, is that a piece of turquoise jake's friend has on? lol

  18. If there is anything I have learned by reading gay and gossip blogs is that every male actor has sucked a cock at least once in their life. So does that make you gay?

    Posted by: Donald | Apr 11, 2006 2:56:38 PM

  19. They do make a cute couple; but shouldn't "progress" truly be that we don't care if they're gay or straight? ...Just they're cute together?

    Posted by: Ted B. (Charging Rhino) | Apr 11, 2006 3:12:30 PM

  20. I must say, if every couple of cute/handsome guys I saw together were gay then I think we'd out-number the straights.

Really, they are just two cute guys spending time together at a basketball game... it's not like it's a private vacation to some remote island.

  21. But err, Jake and Austin didn't even know one another at HighSchool like this article said. Shouldn't your publicist know this? It was Adam Levine he went to school with.

I think this article is fake to some extent, or taken out of context. And yes, I do think it'd make a huge diffeence if gay actors came out. And sorry, but I like these 2 as a couple. Why not? They look good.

  22. they look pretty gay...

    Posted by: Mike p | Apr 11, 2006 5:22:37 PM

  23. Additionally, I'd believe they were a couple berfore Reichen and Lance Bass.

    I'd also prefer it.

Posted by: Rob (lrdarystar) | Apr 11, 2006 5:28:04 PM

  24. They're exactly the same age and both worked on Day After Tomorrow. Gee, they might have become friends. Ya think?

    Posted by: | Apr 11, 2006 5:43:48 PM

  25. This SO reminds me of the Tab Hunter biography I just read in that Tab's agent always warned him against going out with just one male friend. Three guys out together are men about town, went the wisdom. Two guys out and about are on a date. Same assumptions still -and wrongly- apply fifty years later.
