Katharine McPhee or Taylor Hicks: American Idol Musings

Katharine Taylor

Okay, so I haven't done an American Idol post all season, so I guess now is the time. I just checked my temperature and there's no McPheever, and I'm sure I don't have enough "Wooo" in me to be a member of the Soul Patrol, but I think there's an obvious winner here, and Simon Cowell, the only real critic on television, said it last night.

However, my note has nothing to do with the final decision, but is a bit of advice to the AI producers. Force Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee to record one song together, and let this be the song:

"Up Where We Belong" — Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes
Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes - 20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of Joe Cocker - Up Where We Belong

Now, if you don't remember (or were too young), this song was a huge pop hit back in the day. And if there are two voices perfect to remake it, they are Taylor's and Katharine's. If you don't believe me, listen.

Maybe this pick is just cheesy enough to inspire the American public to welcome back a contemporary pop duet revival. Maybe.

And maybe one day Tori Spelling will have earned enough respect for the Idol producers to actually ID her properly.

There. I said it. And I'm really looking forward to watching the Gayken belt one out tonight.

  1. I voted for Chris last night. There's a CD I'll buy. Kat and Taylor? Meh.

And the Gayken... that's going to be a hoot. Where's Kathy Griffin? I need her new show to start already.

  2. Andy, just want to say how much I love this site!I think it's around a year ago that I discovered it.Haven't left since. No p-town updates? When do you go?
Anyway,I agree.Simon says it like it is.You are so right!I am old enough to remember not only that song but MANY other power duets. They would sound fantastic!

  3. Taylor all the way. Katherine is severely unoriginal and boring, but a great singer. Taylor is a performer.

Simon was 100% right, the McPheever fizzles at crunch time, but Taylor shines when there's pressure on - as we saw in his first and last performances last night.

  4. I am still a bit by the national love for Taylor. I am really in the minority here. I can't listen to him or watch him - esp because he looks like he is taking a painful poop when he sings.

  5. sorry - I am still a bit SHOCKED by the national love for Taylor, that's what I meant to say.

  6. I use to scratch my head at the success of this show, then I remembered who they voted for to be our President. To think that more people watch and vote for this crap than voted in the last election. God is this country fucked up. I long for the days of old, when talent was something one worked for, and the cream rose to the top.

  7. Patrick, it's television, get over your bad self! If the Presidential elections were managed like AI then we'd have more voters. The nominees need to meet on stage each week and debate. After each debate we get to phone in and the lowest vote getter goes home. By November we're left with a single candidate and that person is crowned The American President. Harken back to the last two elections and name a single instance when Bush won a debate... he didn't, and he would have gone home.

  8. I agree with Patrick. The fact that a glorified karaoke contest is the number one show in this country disturbs me.

  9. American Idol? More like American Midol. What a snooze. Television just gets more boring with the promotion of yet more American pop culture. Yeah, I know it started in the UK. Anyway, has anyone reaading this blog ever bought a recording from one of the idol contestants? I must confess, I bought the last Kelly Clarkson CD and it was played once and passed on. What a yawn. Every song sounded the same, with the same schtick. Until the DJ's got a hold of it and remixed some of the songs to make them palatable, I never would have paid attention to her again. Even if Kathy Griffin loves her! I just can't get excited about American pop music. Taylor's going to win, but who cares?

  11. Does anyone else think Taylor is good-looking? When I first saw him I didn't think so but recently...he's oddly attractive.

  12. well well well its time to accept the next american idol season 5.America voted then let them decide.Remember talent goes with luck to succeed. Both Katherine and Taylor did their best. And the winner take the "luck to be a star".

  13. Wayne, not to worry, I love trash TV. Housewives? Never miss it. Footballers Wives on BBC? Even trashier than Dynasty. My point was that too many now care more about 'Reality TV' than reality.

To suggest that we choose the leader of the free world, well what use to be a semi-free world, I hope you were joking when you suggest an AI type contest. Many on this blog have a real sense of the trouble this world, lead by our current occupierof the White House, I didn't vote/nor do I consider him my president.

As for that Jay Leno look alike, dressed like Barney last time I saw , looking good to you Jase, all I can say is have the eyes checked sweetie.

Andy Happy belated Birthday by the way.

  14. I love Taylor....Birmingham, Alabama has two American Idols and one finalist. Taylor is a great guy, and not because he lives in my neighborhood. They need to rename it , Birmingham Idol.

  15. Has anyone noticed that all the Idol winners and runners up have been from the south with the exception of Katharine?

edit: and Guarini, although he was born in GA and his dad is an elected official in suburban Atlanta...

    Fantasia-North Carolina

    Justin-Georgia (Pennsylvania)
    Clay-North Carolina

  16. A real snoozer of a finals no? Neither one is really worthy of the title. the true test wil be when they record songs that fit their vocal stylings. Taylor already has an indie cd out and we know he can play a harmonica and guitar. I don't see mega stardom for any of these contestants. They only have a sort period to capitalize on their 15 minutes because the new season begins early next year.

The real idol for me was from Nashville Star, Chris Young. 20 years old, a smooth voice, a songwriter, plays an instrument, and he's 6-4 and very good looking.

    Congratulations to Taylor.
